When I first saw Lorraine Fossi's work, I was immediately stuck by two things; one, her great sense of color, and two, her excellent sense of composition. Her art displays an arresting quality that invites further inspection. When you come to see and realise that her paintings are not just pure abstract works, but about the sea, one is struck by the command and knowledge she possesses of the subject. Anyone who has sailed the sea, looked upon it, or gone through a storm on the sea, will recognise elements that she has managed to convey.
Many abstract artists today fail utterly to keep and hold your attention. Their work is decorative at best, and dismal in terms of its power to hold your attention and invite you in to see more each time you look at the work. Lorraine Fossi's absolute assurance of composition (a rarity, but necessity, with good abstract painting) ensures the viewer a thoroughly rewarding experience, and works that reward viewing many times. She's an outstanding artist.
Kevin Geary (Artist; writer)
Lorraine Fossi was born in Paris in 1964 to a family of artists and architects. Initially she followed in their footsteps by delving into an architectural career, earning Fossi success and recognition.
Meanwhile, and since a child, Fossi was spending her idle time in Normandy, near the beaches of Omaha. Walks and swims developed and nurtured a passion for big waves, moody weather and fearless intrusions in the sea. It was as if Lorraine was already looking for a daring sense of belonging.
When Fossi moved to London in 2000, she became immersed in the city’s world-renowned arts culture. It was here that she ‘met’ with painting, participated in studio training and developed her vocation.
In 2008, Lorraine was commissioned to create a large painting representing the Sea. Through this unique painting project a new pictorial questioning was uncovered enabling connection with the past, and a very special relationship was born. This formed the foundations of what would become Fossi’s ‘Sea Abstractions Collection.’
